Most tools labelled "AI voice agent" are really just dictation software. A real AI voice agent understands intent and takes actions — it sends your email, creates your task, plays your song — without you touching the keyboard or switching apps. We tested six tools to find which ones actually deliver.
TL;DR
The term "AI voice agent" is used loosely. In this article we define it strictly: a tool that takes actions on your computer or in connected apps in response to voice commands. Dictating a message into your cursor is not agent behaviour — that's dictation. Sending the message to the right person without you opening the app is.
This distinction matters because the category splits cleanly: NovaVoice, Raycast AI, and Copilot have some degree of agent capability. ChatGPT Voice, Wispr Flow, and Siri are primarily input tools. We ranked all six and noted which side of the line they fall on.
The only AI voice agent that combines Whisper-quality dictation with real app control. Eight integrations — Gmail, Todoist, Google Calendar, Telegram, WhatsApp, Spotify, X, and Hacker News — all controllable by voice without switching apps. Works on all three major desktop platforms.
Pros
Cons
Best for Mac power users
Keyboard launcher with AI built in. Voice input works but Raycast is fundamentally keyboard-first — you summon it with a shortcut and type or speak a command. Excellent for developers who live in the keyboard and want AI assistance without leaving their workflow. No agent-level app control for third-party services.
Pros
Cons
Best conversational AI
OpenAI's voice mode is the gold standard for back-and-forth spoken conversation with an AI. The Advanced Voice Mode handles interruptions, emotion, and real-time exchanges naturally. Less useful for computer control or dictating text into other apps — it lives inside the ChatGPT window.
Pros
Cons
Best for Microsoft 365 users
Deep integration with the Office suite makes Copilot genuinely powerful if you live in Word, Outlook, Teams, and Excel. It can draft emails, summarize documents, and generate presentations — all from inside Microsoft apps. Outside the Microsoft ecosystem it's much weaker and not designed for system-wide voice control.
Pros
Cons
Good dictation, no agent layer
Solid AI dictation tool focused purely on speech-to-text. Whisper-based, works system-wide, produces clean formatted output. The experience is polished but the scope is narrow — no AI assistant, no app control, no agent actions. Good if you only need to speak instead of type.
Pros
Cons
Built-in but limited
OS-level assistants handle basic commands — set a timer, open an app, play music from the native player — but can't compose emails in Gmail, create Todoist tasks, or control third-party apps by voice. Cortana has been largely discontinued on Windows. Siri on Mac is improving but remains focused on Apple services.
Pros
Cons
An AI voice agent does more than transcribe speech — it understands intent and takes actions on your behalf. Dictation software converts your words to text wherever your cursor is. An AI voice agent can send an email, create a task, or play a song — all by voice, without you switching apps. NovaVoice combines both: Whisper-quality dictation plus eight app integrations controllable by voice.
NovaVoice is the only full-featured AI voice agent that runs natively on macOS, Windows, and Linux. Raycast AI is Mac-only. Most other voice-agent tools are web or mobile apps, not desktop applications. If you're on Windows or Linux and want a real voice agent, NovaVoice is currently the only option.
Yes. NovaVoice includes a Gmail Connector that lets you compose and send emails entirely by voice. Activate with a hotkey, say 'send an email to Alex — subject: meeting tomorrow — body: let's sync at 10am', and it drafts and sends without you touching your keyboard or opening Gmail.
NovaVoice offers a free plan that includes system-wide dictation, the AI assistant, and access to Connector integrations. You can send messages on Telegram, control Spotify, and dictate in every app — all on the free tier. Paid plans unlock higher usage limits and priority processing.
NovaVoice's Agent Mode currently integrates with Gmail, Todoist, Google Calendar, Telegram, WhatsApp, Spotify, X (Twitter), and Hacker News. You can send emails, create tasks, schedule events, send messages, play music, post updates, and more — all by voice, without switching apps.
Free plan includes dictation, AI assistant, and Connector.
